Georgie

Disability Champion

I’m Georgie. I’m 28 and I live in Perth . I have had Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy since I was born so I’m quite used to having to adjust my environment to suit my needs. This is why I have enjoyed being part of the Centre for Inclusive Living group for many years now, where I am acknowledged to be an expert of my own experiences and my needs. I feel CILPK gives me a platform to raise awareness for the people in our community who live with disabilities.

CILPK has given me a community of people who understand the access issues and inequalities I have faced; and a support network of people who are willing to work together to improve these issues. I am excited to continue working with CILPK to raise community awareness, challenge discrimination and ensure facilities are in place for people who have varying support needs.

Outside of CILPK, I enjoy being involved with a few other volunteer groups.
Since 2012, I have been a member of the Straight Talking Group- a research group at Dundee University, who work to improve communication skills of doctors, medical students and teachers; as well as providing insight on matters of complex communication needs to teams of P.H.D. students who seek to develop improved software and devices .

We dedicate a lot of time to help to provide training to multiple groups on the issues that face people with complex communication needs.

I also love to volunteer at Care Sound Radio every week, creating shows based on care home requests. Music is definitely one of my passions and I love to bring joy to others through the radio show!
I’m excited to continue all of my volunteer projects and having the communities that I do, has helped to focus my energy and passions into productive avenues for change.
